Three Minute Thesis Competition 2019

Research students from Swinburne Sarawak are engaging in a Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition to present their 80,000-word thesis in under three minutes. This is the fourth time Swinburne Sarawak has hosted the competition due to the overwhelming responses from previous years. Originated from the University of Queensland, Australia, the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition that aims to develop postgraduate research students' communication skills has since gained its reputation across the globe.

Dr. Heidi Collins, Director of Higher Degrees Research, shares that a researcher should not only acquire the technical skills related to their discipline, but should incorporate other sets of skills as well. "Outstanding research needs to be shared, so it is crucial that we encourage students to learn to communicate to diverse audiences" she added.

The research students whom will be presenting come from various research fields including business, biotechnology, computer science and engineering. The topics include teaching autistic children behaviours through dance, controlling Aedes mosquitos using fungus, producing energy using oil palm waste, and the effects of policies on people.

Swinburne welcomes the public to the competition with free admission, in which audiences will get to vote for their favourite speaker in the "People's Choice Award". The competition will be held in Swinburne's Lecture Theatre at 3pm on Friday, 26th April. In conjunction with the competition, Swinburne will also be hosting the Swinburne Bazaar, where visitors can enjoy a variety of local and international delicacies.
