Professional development programs in seismic engineering have been conducted continuously for the structural engineering community in Malaysia, and Dr. Daniel Looi, who is a Civil Engineering lecturer, is an active researcher in seismic engineering.
Three seismic engineering events in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, respectively were carried out for the past six months, as part of his passion in sharing knowledge and educating the structural engineering community in adopting seismic design for Malaysia.
23 October 2018: Keynote presentation at the Trimble Tekla BIM Innovation Conference 2018 at Hilton Hotel, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
The first event was an invitation by Trimble Solutions (who is more well-known by its signature product Tekla Structures), to give a keynote presentation. The conference was attended by 80 participants from various stakeholders in the construction industry in Sabah. The presentation ended with a dynamic dialogue session in discussing the challenges for the construction industry in relation to the first seismic design code for Malaysia.
18-19 December 2018: Speaker for a 2-day symposia and workshops “Earthquake resistant design of RC buildings based on the EC8 Malaysia NA: From loading characterisation to RC detailing” organized by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) at Crystal Crown Hotel, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
The second event was an annual event of series of 2-day symposia and workshops organised by the IEM since 2011. Daniel is one of the key contributors of the Malaysia’s first seismic design code, and this is the 8th year he presented as a speaker, but first time taking the affiliation of Swinburne Sarawak. The symposium was attended by 80 participants, most of them were IEM’s graduate and corporate members. This annual event was a legacy of the late Adjunct Professor Ir. MC Hee, who was the mentor to Daniel. Interestingly, Ir. MC Hee was an alumnus of Swinburne Institute of Technology in Melbourne, graduated in 1962.
28 April 2019: Invited speaker at the Trimble Constructible BIM seminar at Pullman Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak.
This third event was an invitation by Trimble solutions, attended by some 50 engineers. According to many participants, this is the first time they have attended a seismic related seminar in Kuching.
