KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus concluded a successful meeting when its Pro-Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Heng Ho Lau hosted a working visit by Professor Andy Chan, Vice-Provost (Research and Knowledge Exchange) of the University of Nottingham Malaysia where the two parties discuss matters on research collaboration and student mobility.
Nottingham University expressed its interest to work with Swinburne Sarawak in the areas of sustainable technology and, technology and agriculture. This collaboration will involve Swinburne’s Centre for Digital Futures and Center for Sustainable Technology, respectively.
“This is the start of an exciting research partnership between our two institutions,” said Professor Ida Fatimawati, the Executive Dean for Swinburne’s School of Research. “Research is characteristically collaborative, and it is imperative that we pool our research capabilities to tackle sustainability and technology use,” she added.
On student mobility, both Swinburne and Nottingham were keen to collaborate in giving international students the mobility opportunities to experience both West Malaysia and Borneo, Sarawak.
According to Prof Ida, Nottingham University also expressed interest in a proposed three-way research partnership that could be formally formed by the end of the year. The partnership will see a tri-university alliance where each university will fund one PhD student for a research project. The two universities also discussed having academics from the University of Nottingham Malaysia be external higher degree by research supervisors for niche areas in Swinburne Sarawak.
Swinburne Sarawak welcome research opportunities that provide students with opportunities to make a tangible difference both in academia and in industry. With research that is focused on creating real change in society, and its human and technical resources, Swinburne’s research and development activities concentrate on future manufacturing, sustainable futures, digital frontiers, personal and societal wellbeing, and inspirational science and technology,’ she added.

Also present at the working visit is Professor Law Ching Lim, Dean, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Mr Jagdish Singh Mali, Director Student Recruitment and Marketing, and Mr James Ho, Director for Business Development and Liaison, Swinburne Sarawak.
