Swinburne Sarawak students clinch first runner-up spot in UCSI Bursa Young Investor Challenge 2023

KUCHING – A team of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus students successfully secured the first runner-up spot in the Bursa Young Investor Challenge 2023 organised by UCSI University on 18 November 2023.

Competing among 30 teams from various universities in Sarawak, the Swinburne Sarawak team, which comprised Murtada Mohammed Rashed, Noah Mesfin Gebru and Edwin Kamiri Ng’ang’a, received a cash prize worth RM1,500.

The Bursa Young Investor Challenge 2023 offers a dynamic and immersive shares simulation game designed for university students seeking to enhance their understanding of stock market investments.

This innovative game introduces participants to various scenarios that test and sharpen their financial intelligence. By engaging in simulated trading situations reflective of the actual stock market, students gain valuable insights into the complexities of financial markets. This hands-on experience not only cultivates their skills as potential investors but also provides a unique perspective on the role of a financial analyst.

Murtada, the team leader, said that participating in the stocks competition was an enriching experience that deepened his understanding of financial markets.

“Engaging in the game provided valuable insights into stock analysis, trading strategies and risk management. The collaborative nature of the competition allowed my team to pool our knowledge and make informed decisions. Despite the challenges, the excitement of the game made the learning process enjoyable.

“Ultimately, clinching the first runner-up position was a testament to our collective efforts and strategic thinking. This experience not only honed my skills in stocks but also underscored the importance of teamwork in navigating the complexities of the financial world,” said Murtada.

Dr Yii Kwang Jing, the team’s mentor and Discipline Leader (Accounting and Finance) at Swinburne Sarawak, underscored the transformative impact of the competition on students. He emphasised the invaluable opportunity for students to connect and engage with external finance experts and participants from diverse institutions.

“Such interactions are pivotal in enhancing students’ practical and innovative problem-solving skills. This initiative also aligns with Swinburne’s Moon Shot 1 and Moon Shot 2, where students can engage with external industries, gain work experience and secure a job after graduation,” he said.
