KUCHING -A mobile game called “UnFold” developed by five Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus students has recently been rated as one of the top 10 apps for Windows phone.
The design students who are majoring in multimedia were among 138 in the country that had created their own game under the Integrated Content Development (ICON) program of MSC Malaysia.
The MSC Malaysia is the national information and communication technology initiative. Its ICON program is aimed at giving local developers a chance to build their own apps on the Windows Phone 8 ecosystem.
The rating was carried out by the Multimedia Development Corporation, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, and Nokia.
The Swinburne Sarawak students, who will graduate in October this year, developed the side scrolling game as the final year project of their three-year design course.
It was built in partnership with Nokia Malaysia which provided the students with the latest devices worth more than RM10,000, including the Lumia 1520 Windows Phone 8 high-end smartphone.
The students took 10 weeks to develop the game based on the history of Nokia, complete with animation and visual effects.
Early this year, Microsoft made the game available on its Windows Phone Store, a digital distribution platform it created which allows users to download the game onto their Windows phone devices.
Three of the five students – Jerome Chan, Calvin Kau and Tho Zia Szee, – were present at the graduation of the 138 app developers and the awards presentation ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, recently.
Two others, Renusha Athugala and Benjamin Tay, were unable to attend the event which was officiated by Dato’ Sri Ahmad Shabery bin Cheek, Minister of Communications and Multimedia.
