Melbourne has been ranked fourth in the world in the first global grading of major international student cities by the London-based QS organisation, an international ranking organisation for universities.
The Minister responsible for international students Louise Asher said the ranking puts Melbourne ahead of all other Australian capital cities as the best place for international students, and fourth behind only Paris, London and Boston.
“The Victorian Coalition Government welcomes the announcement that Melbourne has scored so highly as a global study destination,” Ms Asher said.
“We are proud to outrank other Australian capitals and other study cities around the world, especially since this ranking is based on a wide range of indicators including the prestige of our education institutions, affordability, diversity and strong employability of our graduates.
International education is Victoria’s largest export. More than 160,000 international students from 165 countries were enrolled in Victorian education institutions by the end of November 2011. The sector injects $4.8 billion into the state’s economy each year and creates an estimated 50,000 jobs for Victorians.
Ms Asher said while students spend valuable time gaining qualifications to build great careers they can enjoy Melbourne’s welcoming cosmopolitan community; outstanding arts, food and wine; Australia’s best shopping; and diverse sporting and leisure opportunities.
“The Coalition Government continues to strive to ensure that the tens of thousands of overseas students who come to study in our universities, or in our English language and skills training institutions have a very positive experience in Melbourne,” Ms Asher said.
“Students can also take advantage of many major world sporting events that are scheduled in Melbourne.”
“There are also extensive and diverse tourism opportunities that are accessible as day trips from the city, such as skiing, fishing, sailing, scuba diving, rock climbing, hiking and wine and food appreciation.”
The Coalition Government provides funding and support for international students through a range of initiatives including the International Student Welcome Desk, the 24-hour International Student Care Service, the Study Melbourne website, tailored information days and the Culture Card program.
