KUCHING –SPM school leavers considering further studies could get a helping hand in deciding their career path from industry experts at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ open day to be held on Saturday and Sunday. (Eds: 24 and 25 March)
The event starts from 10am to 5pm on both days.
The university has invited experts from the field of accounting, engineering and biotechnology to provide insights into each discipline while an official from the SCORE Manpower Planning Section of the Chief Minister’s Department will speak about the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy project, which is expected to create more than 800,000 jobs by 2030.
They will share their experience and knowledge of their respective areas at talk sessions on Saturday.
There will be four sessions of one hour each. At 11am Dr Edward Lim, deputy president of CPA Australia Malaysia Division Council, will speak on the topic Are accountants today bean-counter or strategic business leaders?
This will be followed by Dr Hajah Rabyah binti Mohammad Mansor with a presentation on SCORE at 1pm.
Biotechnology: careers and opportunities will be delivered by Shirley Kho, chief executive officer of Biotech Alliance International Sdn Bhd, at 2:15pm.
Jovelynna Chung, human resource manager of Press Metal Bhd, a Malaysian-based aluminium company with extensive global presence, will speak about career opportunities.
The school leavers are requested to have with them their SPM result slip, birth certificate and IC to apply for a program.
The university will waive application fees for applications made during the two-day event. Those with the appropriate entry requirement will be given a letter of offer.
Swinburne Sarawak offers one-year foundation programs in business, engineering, engineering/science, ICT and design. Students who enrol for the April intake will be able to proceed to degree studies next year.
To obtain more information on these programs, academics and course counsellors will be available for consultation.
For those undecided on the course of study, a quick aptitude test is recommended. Counsellors will analyse the result and guide them on to relevant programs.
Information on scholarships and study loan may be obtained from a financial aid booth managed by Yayasan Sarawak.
A student carnival will also take place on Saturday and members of the public are welcome to take part in the activities ranging from the sale of food to games and joy rides on all-terrain vehicles.
Also available include demonstrations of DNA extraction, display of students’ work such as robots, civil engineering models and equipment, 3D animation projects and many more.
