Is Your Degree Enough?

By P Michael

Think a degree alone is enough to land your dream job? Earning a degree is important, but what really matters is what comes next. Here’s how Swinburne Sarawak gives you the edge.

What can students do to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to real-world jobs? That’s what matters. At Swinburne Sarawak, we don’t just focus on helping you earn a degree. We ensure that you graduate with real-world experience that sets you apart in the job market.

So how do we ensure you don’t just learn but also do?

Industry-Connected Learning

A Swinburne education is not just about textbooks and lectures. Hands-on experience is at the heart of our approach. Across different faculties, our students work directly with industry partners, solving real business challenges and gaining practical skills that make them job-ready. This is especially true in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing, and Science, where students get a front-row seat to real industry challenges such as the Final Year Project, a capstone project that allows students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems.

A Competitive Advantage with Work-Integrated Learning

We believe the best way to learn is by doing. That’s why Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) is a key part of our approach. WIL gives students the opportunity to work full-time in a professional organisation for 12 weeks—all while earning academic credit. This structured industry placement allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges while gaining hands-on work experience. Along the way, they develop critical skills that employers actively seek, including problem-solving skills, teamwork, communication skills, and adaptability.

Think a degree alone is enough to land your dream job? Earning a degree is important, but what really matters is what comes next. Here's what Swinburne gives you in terms of WIL.

More than just an internship, WIL is a direct pathway into the workforce. It gives students invaluable industry exposure and networking opportunities before they even graduate. For engineering students, WIL is a compulsory industrial placement, ensuring they are well-versed in real-world industry settings even before completing their degree.

Employers value WIL because it produces graduates who are not just qualified but who are also industry-ready.

Internship that Open Doors

Beyond WIL, Swinburne students can take advantage of optional internships lasting several months. These internships not only boost resumes but also provide direct access to valuable industry networks, giving students a competitive edge before they even graduate.

Learning by Doing: Solving Real Business Challenges

Some courses put students to work on live business projects. It exposes students to opportunities to develop practical solutions for real businesses. Learning is not just about theory – it’s about applying knowledge to real-world situations.

Think a degree alone is enough to land your dream job? Earning a degree is important, but what really matters is what comes next. Here’s how Swinburne Sarawak gives you the edge in terms of WIL.

Swinburne’s Vision for the Future

Our vision is simple: every undergraduate student should gain real industry experience as part of their degree. To make this possible, Swinburne partners with leading companies and businesses, ensuring that students graduate ready to thrive in the workforce.

A degree is just the beginning. What makes Swinburne Sarawak stand out is our commitment to turning students into professionals—even before they graduate. With work placements, internships, and hands-on learning opportunities, our students don’t just learn—they gain real experience that gives them an edge.
