KUCHING – The Leo Club of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus received the most number of awards at the Leo Forum which was held in Keningau, Sabah recently.
The club was presented with no less than seven awards for the various projects it carried out in District 308-A2 which covers Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Labuan, it carried out from 2009 to 2010.
These are the Excellent Club Award, President Award, Secretary Award, Treasurer Award, two Leo Advisor Awards, and Leo Faculty Award.
On top of these, two additional awards were presented to the club on separate occasions. These are the Inter District Project Appreciation Award, presented by District 308-B2 (covering northern Peninsular Malaysia) for its ‘Leo Idol’ project; and the 100% Leo Club President Award presented to the club’s president, Danny Lai Voon Chin, by the International Lions Club, the movement’s headquarters in the United States.
At the Leo Forum in Keningau, Albert Tiang, District Chairman Leo Club said “This year we have a lot of capable presidents like President Danny from Swinburne Sarawak. He brought the club to the highest point and did a fantastic job this fiscal year.
“The Leo Club of Swinburne Sarawak is one of the best clubs throughout District 308-A2.”
A total of 71 Leo clubs from the district attended the forum, an event equivalent to a university’s graduation ceremony.
“We have been doing a lot of projects to help the less fortunate and many recognise our club as one of the most active in the district,” said Lai, a civil engineering student whose term as president ends this month (June).
Under his wing, the club organised and took part in 64 charity sales, fund raising and community service as well as health awareness projects. These included blood donation campaigns that harvested 100 pints annually, food donation to Lions Nursing Home as well as The Salvation Army.
The club also took on a twinning project with the Leo Club of George Town Mutiara, Penang to build better rapport and exchange ideas on how to best serve their respective communities, and hosted visits by its counterparts from abroad.
“We would not have had the chance to contribute to the community without the university’s support,” Lai said, and extended his gratitude to Swinburne Sarawak.
As a show of thanks, Karen Koh, Lions Club District Governor of 308-A2 also presented a certificate of appreciation to Swinburne Sarawak.
Gerald Ng, president-elect of Lions Kuching North, handed over the certificate to Haji Hussain Taiban, registrar of Swinburne Sarawak, at the campus recently.
