ICT training gives students the edge

KUCHING –Six SPM school-leavers had a chance to try their hand on 3D animation, when they signed up for an ICT course organised by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.

The six-week training programme exposed the participants to the fundamental skills and knowledge on 3D animation and the iPhone Operating System (iOS). They were assigned projects to create and animate objects as well as design and develop contemporary Android platform, an operating system used mainly for mobile phones.

The training, conducted by computing lecturers June Jong and Chang Ngee Kiong, was designed to give participants insight into the computing industry and what it would be like to study IT and/or computer science at Swinburne Sarawak.

The participants were put through their paces on computing animation, user interface design for mobile devices and were shown how to use multimedia tools and technologies. They also got a chance to use commercial 3D software and mobile development software to bring their ideas to life.

“The workshops were conducted at our state-of-the-art laboratories which are equipped with Mac desktops and Intel i7 multimedia desktops,” said June Jong, a lecturer with the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science of the university.

“We hope to inspire and motivate the younger generation through the training to embrace ICT.”

“As well as developing their computing skills, the participants were able to experience the study environment within the University,” she added.

The programme also intends to give participants better understanding of how subjects they study at university can help improve their career prospects.

For Mohd Bazli Bin Mohd Azam, 18, the training was an eye-opener to his interest in programming.

According to June, comments from the participants had been very encouraging.

“This is the first time we organised such a programme. The participant’s feedback on the training has been very positive and this is something we would like to continue doing in the future,” she added.
