KUCHING – Engineering undergraduate Ivan Ling Ting Yang made Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus proud again when he was awarded the Anugerah Belia Inovasi (Innovative Youth Award), recently.
Ling received the award from Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, Chief Minister of Sarawak, during the Youth Day celebration at Le Park, Kuching Civic Centre.
The electrical and electronic engineering student also took home a prize money of RM1,500.
“I’m really happy to have received this award alongside big names such as national Olympics diver Pandelela Rinong Pamg (Sports Youth Award) and Noh Hujan (Hujan band frontman Mohamad Noh Salleh who was presented the Art Youth Award),” Ling said.
“Swinburne provided me with the opportunities and resources to achieve this, otherwise I would not have come this far. I will continue to work hard, and hopefully I’ll get the national level Youth Award in the future.”
The 21-year-old Ling said he is grateful to his family for their understanding and support, as well as to his advisors, lecturers and friends.
“I also owe this to the committee members of the clubs I’m involved with. Without them, I would not have gotten this award.”
Ling is no stranger to the limelight. Last year, he was champion in the national level Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) Present around the World (PATW) Competition in Kuala Lumpur, securing him the spot to represent Malaysia in the Asia-Pacific regional round in Singapore.
The PATW competition was open to engineers and technicians, recent graduates, apprentices and young professionals.
Ling was a member of the Swinburne Sarawak team which won the 2012 MakeWeekend Sarawak, a workshop where youths exchanged ideas and built new products and services to solve problems in their industry in 48 hours.
The team went on to represent the State in the Anugerah Cipta, emerging as runner-up for their ‘Blind Assist Device’ project which was designed to help the blind “see”.
He was again a member of the university’s team which won the Freescale Cup 2012 Intelligent Car Racing competition held at Universiti Teknologi MARA in Shah Alam.
As vice-president of the Swinburne Sarawak IET Chapter, Ling was among three committee members who were presented with the society’s Leadership Awards for exhibiting a high level of inter-personal skills, team work and commitment in helping members achieve their potential with professional development resources, last year.
The Swinburne Sarawak IET Chapter was one of the winners of the Most Promising Award in 2012.
