KUCHING -For the fourth consecutive year, the Swinburne Sarawak Institution of Engineering and Technology student chapter has been awarded for outstanding performance by the Institution of Engineering and Technology Malaysia.
Swinburne Sarawak IET chapter vice-secretary Wilson Yeo Wei Siang, treasurer Daniel Vong Wei Liang, logistics officer Lee Hui Loong and media officer Fong Kit How were recently presented with the institution’s Leadership Award.
The four undergraduates were awarded for their commitment in helping members to achieve their potential with professional development resources including mentoring and training, a high level of inter-personal skills and team work.
“We are certainly happy with the award and I’m confident it will inspire the committee further in striving for even bigger achievements,” said Ivan Ling, president of the Swinburne Sarawak IET chapter, a recipient of the same award last year.
He said that some of the events the chapter organised included the Pi Challenge, Intra-University Level Present Around The World, NatTech Photography Competition and site visits to Batang Ai Hydroelectric dam and Assar Palm Oil Refinery Plant.
“These allowed our members to interact with and learn from engineers working in the field,” Ling added.
This is in line with the objectives of the chapter, said Dr Chua Hong Siang, the main advisor of university’s IET chapter.
“One of our aims is to provide platforms for members to develop the desired attributes and competencies learnt in the classroom so that they can apply them in the real world. As a lecturer, it is rewarding when this happens,” said Chua.
The Swinburne Sarawak IET Chapter has been awarded four times since it was formed in 2010. It was awarded Most Promising Chapter in its first year and in 2012 while four of its committee members were recipients of the Leadership Award in 2011.
The IET is one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community. It has more than 150,000 members in 127 countries and offices in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. The institution provides a global knowledge network to facilitate the exchange of ideas and promote the positive role of science, engineering and technology .
