Swinburne Sarawak awards more than RM1 million in scholarships

KUCHING – More than 270 students were awarded RM1.13 million in scholarships by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, recently.

Professor Anthony Cahalan, the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Swinburne Sarawak, presented the awards at a ceremony on campus.

The recipients comprised newly-enrolled students with good public exam results as well as those who scored high distinctions in their diploma, foundation and degree exams.

Four students pursuing PhD and master by research studies were also among the recipients.

Cahalan urged the recipients to continue setting high standard at Swinburne Sarawak and to engage actively in their learning.

“On our part, we will continue to provide the support and infrastructure as well as the expertise to help you along. As far as financial aid is concerned, we have a huge range of scholarships available including those from Yayasan Sarawak, MARA, PTPTN and MELOLISA Foundation,” he said.

Cahalan added that since taking over as the No.1 at the campus early this year, he has been impressed with the commitment and dedication of the staff in providing students with a high quality Australian education.

At the same time, he encouraged students to strike a balance in their studies by taking up extra-curricular activities like sports and recreational pursuits.

“Joining clubs and/or taking part in activities such as these help to mould you into well-rounded individuals so that when you leave university you are not only armed with a degree, but are ready and able to take on the challenges in the real world.

“Academic achievement, although important, is alone not enough when you join the workforce.”

At the ceremony, five industry awards were also presented. Daniel Gan Chun Yin and Hamid Bagha received SAINS’ Best Student Award for Year 1 and Year 2, respectively.

Ernst & Young’s Best Accounting for Year 1 went to Angelina Phui Yung Yung while Chua Yang Lip was awarded for Year 2.

Law Shen Shen was the sole recipient for Wisma Printing’s Book Prize Award.
