Aims and learning outcomes

This unit aims to develop capabilities and proficiency in the English language essential for tertiary education and academic purposes. The aim of this unit is to introduce students to the mechanics and processes of academic writing and research skills. The module also aims to provide students with the knowledge and opportunity to apply effective research skills to their academic written work.

Students who successfully complete this unit should be able to:

1. Read information, diagrammatic, graphic and procedural texts
2. Able to apply the fundamental concepts and elements of academic writing in written work
3. Understand the structure and purpose of abstracts, literature reviews, lists of references, appendices, and other specified components of research reports
4. Prepare written assessments in a range of academic genres relative to their undergraduate field of study
