Chian Hou is the Deputy Head of School for the School of Design and Arts at Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus. With a strong background in education, digital learning, and professional training, he has been instrumental in shaping both academic programs and staff development initiatives.
Chian Hou began his journey with Swinburne Sarawak in 2014 as a Part-Time Academic, teaching in the Foundation Program. In 2015, he transitioned into a Full-Time Academic role, contributing to the development of English language education. He was appointed Coordinator for Language Tests from 2017 to 2018. From 2019 to 2023, he served as a Digital Learning Technologist at the School of Foundation Studies, playing a pivotal role in online learning implementation and the enhancement of digital teaching strategies, particularly during the shift to remote education.
In 2023, Chian Hou moved to the School of Design and Arts, where he taught common English units and courses in the Diploma of Early Childhood Education. He was then appointed as the Head of Department (Education) from February 2024 to January 2025, overseeing curriculum development, faculty management, and student learning experiences.
Beyond academia, Chian Hou is a Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) Certified Trainer, delivering professional training programs in diverse settings. Locally, he has conducted English Language Enhancement Programs for teachers in Malaysia, as well as Competency for Career Development (CFCD) programs under the Leadership Institute (LI) and Sarawak Centre for Performance Excellence (SCOPE). Internationally, he has conducted workshops on writing in Indonesia and the Staff Professional Development Program for AEMG in China. Chian Hou’s work in training and professional development reflects his commitment to lifelong learning and capacity building.
Chian Hou also played a key role in international collaboration as the Program Manager for the Swinburne Sarawak International Immersion Programs in 2023 and 2024. In this role, he coordinated study-abroad experiences, hosting students from KANDA University of International Studies, Japan, and Showa Gakuin Shuei High School, Japan, fostering cross-cultural engagement and global learning opportunities.
