I started on 24 April 2000. We were a very small group of people so, although my role was in Student Administration, I was multi-tasking. I had to tag all the classroom and office doors and the keys; I did the timetabling with the Head of Academics; I had to print the university’s brochures and lecture notes for students to start classes. We were a young team, including our colleagues from Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne who had come to help us set up, and we just got on with it. We all made do with whatever we had, but it was one happy family, that’s for sure.
What has made the difference is that I enjoy what I do. It also helps that my career has evolved. I started as a Student Admin staff, and there were lots of opportunities to learn in that role. From there, I went into Marketing & Student Recruitment Unit and responsible in getting Malaysian students to study at Swinburne Sarawak. After that, I went to the then Marketing Manager, James Ho, and told him I wanted to try out International Marketing. He was very supportive, and I was given a lot of liberty to make decisions and to take risks. This has kept me going and interested. As a result, Swinburne is not just a job; it is also a passion.
