Team Photon consisting of first-year undergraduate students majoring in international business Jeffrey Bun and Loh Ngik Sing and foundation student Lim Han Jet won the first Swinburne Sarawak Hult Prize OnCampus Program that took place over six weeks culminating in pitch day on 28 November.
Ngik Sing said that the event had given her “the opportunity to work on an idea that could bring benefits to the society”. Jeffrey Bun echoed her sentiments, adding that it was his first time taking part in a competition at university and he was excited to be able to move on to the next step: the Regional Summit that would be taking place in March or April.
The youngest in the team, IT foundation student Han Jet said the best part about participating was working closely with teammates who were business majors. He had learned something beneficial from his seniors and was excited about learning more, meeting other winning teams from around the world.
The students topped 10 other teams comprising a mix of foundation and undergraduate students studying in a range of courses at Swinburne Sarawak.
The Hult Prize OnCampus Program was launched at Swinburne Sarawak on 24 October, the first such program in the state. It is considered one of the world’s most important social entrepreneurship awards in world. Its annual themes align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and “challenge young people to solve the world’s toughest issues by empowering them to make money, do good and make life better for millions of people through the creation of for-good for-profit businesses.” |
