This event is a forum titled career as a Chemical Engineer, a traditional forum headed by Dr. Elaine Yeu successfully took place on 2nd October 2021 (Saturday) from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. There were 28 participants for the event, including SUTS IChemE advisors, Dr. Elaine Yeu and Dr. How Bing Shen, three speakers from NECC and students from different engineering disciplines (Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Electronics, Robotics and Mechatronics).
The Webinar was organised SUTS IChemE Student Chapter in collaboration with IChemE NECC Malaysia. The event’s main objectives include introducing young engineers to IChemE National Careers Committee, sharing with young engineers and recent graduates on the career paths in Chemical Engineering, and networking with IChemE NECC MY members. With this event organised, the participants are able to gain more insight into the career as a chemical engineer. They can also know more about the career as a process and equipment engineer at Micron and career as an engineer at an oil and gas multinational company, as well as the life as a research graduate student.
The speakers invited to the session include Ms Gan Mee San, who is currently working at Micron Singapore as a process and equipment engineer, Mr Lai Ke Qin (Thomas) from Oil & Gas MNC and Abishek Manoharan, a graduate research student from Monash University Malaysia.
The event started with a welcome address by Mr Abdulqader (President of SUTS IChemE) and Mr Tharindu (Vice President of SUTS IChemE). The session was passed to Mr Abishek, the secretary of IChemE NECC Malaysia, to address and introduce NECC to the participants. The other speakers, Ms Mee San (Publicity Director of IChemE Malaysia) and Mr Thomas (Chairperson of IChemE NECC Malaysia), briefly introduced themselves. Slido link was shared to the Microsoft Teams chatbox for participants to send their questions and doubts to the speakers. The questions mainly focused on the factor to be considered when applying for jobs, the necessity of pursuing the studies, job scopes involved in different sectors, some tips on the transition from students to working in the industry. Both the speakers shared their own opinions and experiences professionally regarding the questions asked by the participants. A photo was taken before the session came to an end. The event was ended very successfully, with all of the audiences actively participating.
