In conjunction with World Lung Cancer Day on 1st August, School of Chemical Engineering and Science, in collaboration with Swinburne Business Development & Liaison (BDL), Society of Cancer Advocacy & Awareness (SCAN), and Sarawak Research & Development Council (SRDC) had organised Lung Cancer Awareness Day 2019. The event was held at G001 Auditorium, Swinburne Sarawak, 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 31 July 2019.
The aim of the event was to raise awareness about lung cancer as well as the importance of smoking cessation as part of lung cancer prevention. A series of activities that target to educate participants on the dangers of smoking (i.e., conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes) and strategies to quit smoking were featured. These activities included pre-event awareness workshops, smoking cessation pledge, scavenger hunt, talks from invited speakers, and sharing session from ex-smokers on their journey to quit smoking.
Over 100 staff and students of Swinburne Sarawak as well as high school students, and members of the public attended the event. The first 30 guests who registered that day received gifts from SCAN. Also present were SRDC General Manager, Dr. Peter Morin Nissom; SRDC Deputy General Manager, Dr. Ivan Yap; SCAN President, Mdm. Sew Boon Lui; Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of Swinburne Sarawak, Professor John Wilson; Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, Professor Su Hieng Tiong; and Head of School of Chemical Engineering and Science, Dr. Hwang Siaw San.
Business Development & Liaison (BDL) of Swinburne Sarawak donated RM1,000 to Society of Cancer Advocacy & Awareness (SCAN). Programme Chair, Dr. Irine Runnie Henry Ginjom thanked Society of Cancer Advocacy & Awareness (SCAN) and Sarawak Research & Development Council (SRDC) for supporting the event. She also thanked the organising committee and student volunteers for the job well done and said the event was a success with their support and help.
