100 Swinburne Sarawak students awarded scholarships

KUCHING – A hundred Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus students were awarded scholarships for excelling in their studies.

Forty-four new students who enrolled into Swinburne Sarawak’s foundation and degree programs were awarded ‘Entrance’ scholarships. This category of scholarship is awarded to students who had scored top marks in SPM and STPM.

Two students, who achieved good results and participated actively in extra-curricular activities while in secondary school, received the university’s ‘Leadership’ scholarships. They were Sonia Soen Anak Nahar formerly of SMK St Teresa Kuching and Angela Thien Chui Yee, a former student of SM Kian Kok.

Students who scored high distinctions and distinctions in their respective programs in last semester’s exams were awarded ‘Merit’ scholarships. There were a total of 54 recipients of this scholarship.

“I feel appreciated for the hard work I’ve put in. I also feel lucky to have been awarded as well, said Samuel Liau, a second year Multimedia Design undergraduate who was awarded a Merit scholarship.

“The scholarship award is motivating and I’m encouraged to do well in my studies. It’s (the scholarship) a bonus for and I’ll try my best to go for another one next semester,” said the student from Shah Alam.

The scholarships, worth more than RM220,000, were presented by Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen who is Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Swinburne Sarawak.

In his speech Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen called on the recipients to continue setting the high standard as the university’s scholarship system requires students to do continually well.

“Your success is our success. Our success is measured by how well you do,” he said.

Professor Lueckenhausen added that the university has the capabilities in helping them with their studies and urged them to cooperate and collaborate with the university’s staff in their learning.

Also present to witness the event were the families of the scholarship recipients as well as the heads of schools and departments of Swinburne Sarawak.
