130 Swinburne Sarawak students awarded RM600,000 in scholarships

KUCHING –Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus awarded 130 of its high achieving students with close to RM600,000 in scholarships recently.

The scholarships were presented to the recipients by Associate Professor Enn Ong, Director Academic, of Swinburne Sarawak.

Recipients comprised newly enrolled students who had obtained outstanding public examination results, and students in foundation, diploma and degree programs who scored top marks in semester exams.

Of the newly-enrolled students awarded, 36 are in foundation programs while 27 are undertaking degree studies in engineering, science, business, computing and design.

The university also awarded new students who had done well both academically and in co-curricular activities while in secondary school. Tiong Yong Jie from SMK Tong Hua in Bintulu, and Ting Yoon Chuan from SMK Bintulu who are enrolled in foundation programs, received Swinburne Sarawak’s Sports and Leadership scholarship.

For their impressive academic achievements in scoring high distinctions and distinctions in semester exams, 61 students from foundation, diploma and degree programs across a range of disciplines were awarded scholarships.

Postgraduate students were also mong the recipients of scholarships at the ceremony. The university’s Postgraduate Research Studentship Award was presented to PhD students Kelvin Yong, Wong Wei Jing and New Zealander Heidi Ellise Collins.

Masters degree student Amir Mohammad Shahi from Iran was also awarded.
The Postgraduate Research Studentship Award comprises a tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend for a maximum of four years for a PhD enrolment, and two years for a Masters enrolment.

The event also witnessed third-year engineering undergraduates Aaron Kuek Chun Fan and Calvin Tang Tieng How receiving Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd’s Best Mechanical Engineering Award and Best Civil Engineering Student Award, respectively.

Both were presented with the awards by Wendy Yong, the human resource manager at Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd.
