279 Swinburne Sarawak graduates celebrate milestone

KUCHING – A proud cohort of 279 graduates of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus celebrated the completion of their higher education by receiving their scrolls at the university’s graduation ceremony on 3 October 2024.

The ceremony took place at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) and witnessed the presentation of awards to a total of 247 undergraduates, consisting of 127 in business, 50 in computing, 47 in engineering, 15 in design, five in science and three in media and communication.

Five students graduated with a Diploma of Business Management, one with a Graduate Diploma of Business Administration (International) and another with a Graduate Certificate of Business Administration (International).

Eighteen graduates from Master’s programs received their awards, including seven who earned a Master of Business Administration (International), three in Master of Construction Management Practice, three in Master of Engineering (Research), and one each from the Master of Information Technology, Master of Information and Communication Technologies (Research), Master of Science (Research), Master of Arts (TESOL) and Master of Construction Management.

Awards were also conferred to seven Doctor of Philosophy graduates, of which four were from the field of engineering, two from business and one from science.

In addition to the 279 attending graduates, 32 individuals received their degrees in absentia for this graduation cycle.

The ceremony celebrated graduates not only from Malaysia but also from a diverse array of countries, including Bangladesh, Brunei, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Germany, India, Indonesia, Mauritius, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Yemen and Zimbabwe.

Valedictorian Adeline Yong Qian Yi, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science), expressed that her time at Swinburne Sarawak had been enjoyable and rewarding.

“I have made so many new friends, especially through various club activities that really pushed me out of my comfort zone. One of the highlights was the exchange program, which gave me the chance to immerse myself in new cultures and experiences. The staff at Swinburne have been very helpful and the lecturers are always patient and willing to share their knowledge.

“Of course, there were challenges along the way, but with the support and encouragement from my friends, family and the amazing Swinburne community, I was able to overcome them and grow both personally and academically. It has been a journey filled with unforgettable moments and valuable lessons,” she shared.

Congratulating her fellow graduates, Yong said, “You’ve worked hard, overcome challenges and made it to this moment. This is not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter. Embrace the future with confidence, always look at the bright side and trust that you have what it takes to succeed. You own it!”

The graduation ceremony was presided over by Swinburne University of Technology Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Pascale Quester, who also presented the awards to the graduates.

Also present at the event were Professor Simon Ridings, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer, Swinburne; Dr Werner van der Merwe, Vice President, Innovation and Enterprise, Swinburne; Ir Professor Lau Hieng Ho, Swinburne Sarawak Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer; members of Swinburne Melbourne’s management team; and members of the Council, Board of Directors and Executive Group of Swinburne Sarawak.
