400 Swinburne Sarawak students graduate

KUCHING – A total of 400 students from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus received their scrolls at the university’s graduation award and conferral ceremony on Wednesday, 26 October, 2011.

Chief Minister of Sarawak Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud who is also the Pro Chancellor of the university, presented the scrolls in the presence of Ben Cohen, Councillor of Swinburne University, Melbourne, at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

The graduands comprised 367 who had completed degree programs and 33 who had completed diploma programs.

This is Swinburne Sarawak’s eighth graduation ceremony since the campus was established in Kuching in 2000. Since 2004, about 350 to 400 students graduate annually in a range of disciplines namely engineering, business, science, ICT and design. The programs offered in these disciplines are undifferentiated from those of its home campus in Melbourne, Australia.

Also presented were corporate and industrial awards. Jeremy Chia Wei Liang was awarded Yayasan Sarawak’s Anugerah Graduan Cemerlang Sarawak while its Anugerah Galakan Bumiputera was awarded to Ronnie Johan Bin Iswandy @ George.

Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) awards were presented to Ian Chang Yang and Wong Wei Jing.

The Ernst & Young Best Student in Accounting Year 1 award went to Krishman Varges A/L PV John. Its Year 2 award was presented to Wendy Chan Wang Ping while Luna Chin Su Kim took its Year 3 award.

The KPMG Tax Services Sdn Bhd Prize for Academic Excellence in Taxation 2011 was awarded to Sim Jin Jin.

Luna Chin Su Kim and Sandra Lim Suk Yi were winners of the CPA Australia Book Prize for Third Year Financial Accounting 2011.

Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd awards went to Victor Bong Nee Shin.

Kelvin Yong Sheng Check was Sarawak Energy Bhd’s Best Engineering Graduate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Sarawak Aluminium Company Awards went to Singankutti Arachchige Don Hasitha Dharmapriya and Tam Say Kiong.

Chiong Lee received Naim Land Sdn Bhd’s  Award for Best in Civil Engineering.

The ceremony also witnessed the inaugural presentation of the Swinburne Malaysia Alumni Association Awards. Evelyn Hui Yann Liew, a counselor with the university’s Student Operations Unit, was awarded the Swinburne Alumni Award for Programs That Enhance Learning 2010.

Christina Yin was the recipient of the Swinburne Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence 2011. Yin is Associate Head at the School of Language and Foundation.

Among those present at the ceremony included state and foreign dignitaries, heads of Sarawak government departments, senior members of the university from the Sarawak and Melbourne campuses, invited guests and families of graduating students.
