KUCHING – As global demand across industries for graduates with degrees in ICT and computing continue to rise so is the interest from students who recognise this shift as the world moves into Industry 4.0. With the launch of two new majors in Cybersecurity and Internet of Things (IoT), enrolments for ICT and computing programmes at Swinburne has doubled year on year and this is testament to the confidence students and parents have in Swinburne as a market leader in technology-related programmes.
Swinburne is at the forefront of this digital and technology-led shift where all programmes across business, engineering, design and science also incorporate digital and technology elements to ensure graduates are prepared for the future of work. As partners with CISCO and other market leaders, computing and ICT programmes at Swinburne are also recognised by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and this sets Swinburne graduates ahead of the rest.
For students keen to learn more about degrees in the ICT and computing as well as the opportunities for graduates, they are encouraged to attend Swinburne Open Day this Saturday at the Kuching campus and Sunday at Pullman Miri Waterfront from 10am to 5pm. Students will also get to learn more about scholarships and funding options besides speaking with faculty members from the School of Foundation, Faculty of Business, Design and Arts, and Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science.
Delivered by Swinburne Sarawak’s School of Information and Communications Technologies of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, the computing courses provide solid foundational knowledge and industry skills aimed at enhancing students’ understanding of current and future technology. It involves developing software programmes, models and processes for applications in a wide range of industries including engineering, healthcare, transport, finance and manufacturing.
Head of School of Information and Communications Technologies Associate Professor Patrick Then Hang Hui said that between three to five years’ cycle, a majority of its computing courses are fully refreshed to maximise employability of its graduates and to suit employers’ needs. In addition, the School has attracted research grants of over RM1 million from the private and public sectors to boost its research and development (R&D) capabilities.
“Our students get the latest knowledge and develop the right skillsets as a result of constant updates to our programme content and investment in research and development. The School also invests in upgrading its computing and networking devices annually.
Swinburne Sarawak’s computing courses in Computer Science has majors in Software Development, Cybersecurity and Internet of Things (IoT), while the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has majors in Software Technology and Network Technology.
Among these majors offered at the university, the increasingly popular majors are Cybersecurity and IoT where students are taught the contemporary approaches to the analysis, design and implementation of large-scale systems, along with the understanding of the traditional aspects of computer science such as hardware and operating systems. It is oriented towards applications where complex software plays a major role and often of a safety-critical nature.
Students majoring in Cybersecurity can look forward to learning the fundamentals of encryption systems, access control, the internet and get into the minds of hackers and cyber-criminals, while those majoring in IoT can acquire the core programming skills needed to programme devices, develop software solutions, and learn to problem-solve through analysing data from internet-connected devices.
Admission to the Swinburne Open Day is free and potential students are advised to bring along their identification card and birth certificate (Malaysian students) or original passport (international students), original academic transcripts with grading system (SPM/GCE O-Level/UEC/STPM/GCE A-Level/Diploma or equivalent qualification), and original English language proficiency test results (MUET, IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent qualification) for on-the-spot application purposes.
The university’s academic staff and course counsellors will be on hand to guide the students and their parents on other course options available in areas such as business, science, design and engineering. They can also get advice related to scholarships and financial aids and go on a guided tour of the campus.
