Four Swinburne Sarawak Chemical Engineering students win IChemE POPSIG Article Honorarium

KUCHING – Four Swinburne Sarawak Chemical Engineering students, Hanna Maizura binti Mohd Noor Hazrin, Tiffany Ang Jia Ning, Chan Liang Wen and Fitra Dhiafallah Akbar, have made the university proud by winning The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG) Article Honorarium awards, sponsored by Desmet Ballestra and Malaysian Oleochemical Manufacturers Group (MOMG).

The theme of POPSIG for the year 2021 is ‘Correcting the Misperception on Palm Oil’, with aims to disseminate correct information about palm oil and to encourage the involvement of professionals, academia, industrial employees and students in the palm oil industry.

Winners are awarded the Honorarium, which comprises a RM200 cash prize and Certificate of Recognition by IChemE POPSIG. Their articles will be published in the IChemE POPSIG Newsletter.

“I am very delighted to be chosen as one of the winners of the IChemE POPSIG Article Honorariums. I hope that my article can shed light on the various methods for the valorisation of biomass from the palm oil industry in Malaysia,” said Hanna.

“It was a good opportunity to explore new knowledge. I have gained a better understanding of palm oil which is one of the most versatile and important crops in the world,” said Ang.

“I am very surprised to win the competition, and after joining this competition, I realised that there are a lot of misconceptions on palm oil which need to be corrected so that palm oil can have a wider application in the future,” said Chan.

“I was flabbergasted to get the POPSIG Article Honorarium award! I hope to be able to participate in more events in the future,” said Fitra.

Dr Elaine Yeu Yee Lee, a lecturer from Swinburne Sarawak’s School of Chemical Engineering and Science supervised the students in their article submissions and was very pleased with their splendid achievements.

“Hearty congratulations to the winners. I have seen the students’ efforts to explore what makes an effective piece of persuasive writing and write a thought-provoking article. It’s been fantastic for the students to experience the process as students stepping out of their classroom, applying their knowledge, demonstrating critical thinking skills and effectively addressing real-world problems,” said Dr Yeu.
