Geology and rock mechanics seminar at Swinburne Sarawak

KUCHING – An expert in engineering geology will speak at a one-day seminar entitled “Engineering geology and rock mechanics – Applications to rock slope and tunneling” at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, on 11 August, 2011 (Thursday).

Tan Boon Kong, a freelance consultant engineering geologist and chairman of the Working Group on Engineering Geology, Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology of the Geological Society of Malaysia, will introduce engineering geology and rock mechanics with applications to rock slopes and tunneling.

Various local case studies will also be presented as illustrations in his talk on fundamental concepts and requirements in engineering geology in construction projects, and rock slopes and tunnelling.

A former associate professor with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Tan is actively involved in several professional bodies. He is council member of the Institute of Geology Malaysia and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia.

Professional engineers, consultants, contract administrators and employers of both private and public firms are encouraged to attend the seminar.

It is jointly organized by the Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM) Sarawak branch and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.

The registration fee for ACEM members, panel firms and participants from government departments is RM250. For other participants the registration fee is RM350.

Those interested may also register on the day of the event.

Subject to full attendance, participants will be awarded a certificate of attendance.

Professional engineers registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia are eligible to eight hours of CPD.
