Knight Riders take cricket championship

KUCHING – Knight Riders beat Gladiators to win the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus cricket final, recently.

Knight Riders had won the toss and elected to field first. Its tight bowling limited Gladiators to 44 runs / 5 wickets in 5 overs.

The Gladiators’ batting skills were no match against the bowlers of their opponent.  No matter how they tried they could find no success in putting up a good total.

Despite the fact that the chasing total was not overly big, Knight Riders batsmen played a sensible and defensive inning that led them to victory in the fourth over.

With the championship trophy at stake, the competition drew a crowd of supporters to the university field despite a Sunday downpour.

In total, six teams from the university competed in the tournament which was organised by the Swinburne Sarawak Cricket Club.

“We organise the tournament twice a year and try our best to expose our members to competitions outside the university as well. Last year we played a friendly with the Sarawak Cricket Association and won the match so it was a good outing,” said club advisor Mujahid Tabassum who presented the prizes.

The computing lecturer added that in the future, the club may invite teams from other institutions of higher learning to take part in the tournament but noted that cricket is only beginning to gain some interest among Malaysians in the past few years.

“While cricket is especially popular among our South Asian students here, we hope students from other countries will try their hand in the sport too. I am sure they will love it once they have a few games.”

Swinburne Sarawak has a large number of students from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh who are passionate about cricket.
