Pay nothing for first 2 weeks of study at Swinburne

KUCHING – Students who enrol into Swinburne Sarawak 5 July 2021 Foundation and Diploma intakes are not only able to enjoy the flexibility to choose their study load, but also commence their first two weeks of classes with zero payment subject to terms and conditions.

The Start With Zero Fees is an initiative of the Australian university to allow new commencing domestic students to adapt to its teaching and learning style while having the freedom to learn at their own pace by choosing the right amount of study load that suits their schedule.

For first-year Swinburne Foundation Studies (Information Technology/Multimedia) student Joan Kho Jou Xin, the Start With Zero Fees programme gave her the opportunity to better understand online teaching methods and prepare a proper study plan.

“It’s a good initiative by Swinburne and it should be continued at this point in time. However, I do hope that students are allowed back to campus soon so we can also experience face-to-face learning in a university environment and meet our course mates from different places and countries,” Kho said.

Meanwhile, for international students who are currently affected by travel restrictions, they are also entitled to similar privileges with the Start At Home programme. They can start studying online in their home countries with zero fees for four weeks, and get a further 20% fee reduction on any units completed online should they continue their studies beyond the four-week trial.

Commenting on her online learning experience so far, Intensive English (IE) student from Indonesia Nur Riza Ulfa has been enjoying her classes since its commencement.

“I’ve learned a lot of new things from my lecturers who are very helpful, understanding and knowledgeable. Their enthusiasm has also increased my eagerness to learn as much as I can,” said Nur who plans to take up Diploma of Business Management after completing her IE programme.

Since the MCO was imposed nationwide on 18 March last year, Swinburne’s Sarawak campus made the immediate switch to online learning and teaching with a continuity plan. Coupled with a decade of experience in online delivery and the use of one of the world’s leading learning management system CANVAS, Swinburne made a smooth transitioning from face-to-face to digital leaning.

Students are able to experience virtual classrooms and use various learning materials such as videos and podcasts to enhance their learning. Additionally, the university’s key laboratories are also available remotely using special software, and its online library allows students to find databases, subject guides, e-book, thesis, final-year project collections, and related learning materials.

Application for the Fast-Track Swinburne Foundation and diploma programmes is now open. Classes will commence on 5 July 2021. With the fast-track programme, students can expect to complete their studies in February 2022 and immediately progress to a Bachelor’s degree programme in March 2022.

For Sarawakian Bumiputera students from low and middle income (B40 and M40) family background, they are encouraged to apply for the BP40 Bursary Scheme. With the scheme, the total tuition fees at Swinburne throughout the duration of their study are as low as tuition fees at any public universities (IPTA) in Malaysia.
