KUCHING – A public lecture on English will be held at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus on 29 and 30 July.
The two-part lecture, which runs from 2:00pm to 4:00pm on both days, will be conducted by renowned academic Professor Tony T.N. Hung an Honorary Professor at the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), as well as an Adjunct Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Swinburne Sarawak.
The lectures will share the investigation and analysis of the ‘new varieties’ of English from different parts of the world.
The first lecture will focus on the phonology of different varieties of English specifically when comparing its phonetical, phonemic (systemic), lexical and phonotactic differences.
The second lecture will present on vocabulary, syntax and semantics. Hung’s presentation will stress the importance of analysing these on their own terms rather than through the distorting lens of a particular native variety of English.
Both parts of the lecture will include discussions on the tools of research.
Hung, a former head of the Language Centre at the HKBU, holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of California San Diego, an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Lancaster, and a BA (Hons) in English from McMaster University.
His publications include eight books and over 90 journal articles, book chapters and conference presentations in the fields of World Englishes, English grammar, phonology, language teaching, and Chinese linguistics.
