KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus researchers have showcased their academic and research expertise once again by winning multiple awards at the recent Innovation Technology Exposition 2023 (InTEX23) held at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre from 23 to 24 August 2023.
InTEX is an annual event that fosters a research and innovation ecosystem, with this year’s theme being ‘Research and Discovery’. A total of 12 teams from Swinburne Sarawak participated in the event this year, securing five gold medals, six silver medals and one bronze medal.

Congratulations to all!” said Professor Ida Fatimawati Adi Badiozaman, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Swinburne Sarawak.
Business and Social Innovation Centre Director Dr Jee Teck Weng’s gold-awarded innovation, ‘Teach, Innovate, Guide, Experience, Execute and Reflect (TIGEE-R)’, serves as a catalyst for active engagement, critical thinking, reflection and practical application in education and training. Embracing the TIGEE-R framework allows educators and trainers to design comprehensive learner-centred journeys that effectively equip learners for the demands of the contemporary professional landscape. This initiative cultivates a vibrant ecosystem where learners, educators, trainers and investors collaborate synergistically to acquire invaluable skills and knowledge, facilitating holistic growth and development.
“Our colleagues’ and students’ engagement at InTEX23 signifies more than just participation; it marks the unwavering thread of excellence that runs through our endeavours,” said Dr Jee.
“Two consecutive years of securing gold awards stands as a resounding testament to our unwavering dedication to crafting industry-relevant solutions. Rooted in our commitment to redefine conventions, we stand poised to propel the future into new dimensions,” he added.
Ts Professor Lau Bee Theng, Associate Dean (Research and Development) of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, who led the gold-awarded innovation ‘Person-Following Ambulatory Assistance Companion Walker’, said, “Our teams of engineering, computing and science researchers have showcased exceptional prowess in research and product prototyping, culminating in a triumphant achievement at InTEX23.”
The other innovations which were awarded gold medals were ‘Dynamic Connectedness Among Clean and Dirty Energies: New Insight from Hydrogen Energy’ led by Dr Yii Kwang Jing, ‘Detection and Identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis via Computer Vision’ led by Ir Associate Professor Dr Chua Hong Siang and ‘Edge Computing Solution for Plant Disease Identifications with Deep Learning Models’ led by Ts Dr Tay Fei Siang and Ts Dr Lee Sue Han.
Silver medals were awarded to ‘Dynamic Path Planning Using Depth Camera for Navigation by a Companion Robot’ led by Dr Mark Tee Kit Tsun, ‘Electronic Nose for Monitoring the Quality of Food Products and Utility Equipment’ led by Dr Lee Hui En, ‘Branding the Rural Homestay Destinations to Improve the Marketing Visibilities at Telaga Air, Annah Rais, Benuk and Po Ai Villages in Sarawak’ led by Dr Bibiana Lim Chiu Yiong, ‘A.C.E Approach to Support Gifted Children to Learn Accelerated Topics’ led by Ts Professor Lau Bee Theng and Ilyah Abd Aziz, ‘Automated Marine Sand Washing Machine with Chloride Monitoring System’ led by Ts Dr Tay Fei Siang and Dr Chin Mei Yun and ‘ANN-based Decision-Making Tool for Digital Twinning (ADMT-DT) in the Construction Industry’ led by Shan Jiancheng.
Meanwhile, ‘A Kaleidoscope Model to Address Changes in Construction 4.0 Policy’ led by Chan Sze Wen received a bronze medal.
