KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus and Sarawak Energy have signed a three-year renewal of their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including education, innovation, and talent development.
Through this MoU, both parties will continue their collaboration across areas including student consultancy, placements, and internships. Over the years, the partnership has enabled Swinburne Sarawak students to gain work-ready skills and valuable real-world experience through industry projects, giving them a competitive edge in the workforce.
As part of the ongoing collaboration, Sarawak Energy will also continue to provide financial aid to eligible Swinburne Sarawak students who excel in selected fields of study. The partnership further supports a wide range of initiatives, including industry-engaged learning, research and development, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) outreach, corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes, and staff development.
The partnership is part of Sarawak Energy’s Campus Ambassador Programme, which establishes collaborations with selected universities on areas of mutual interest. The MoU between Swinburne Sarawak and Sarawak Energy was first signed in 2019 and renewed in 2023.
The recent MoU renewal signing ceremony was held at Swinburne Sarawak’s campus on 15 August 2025, with Swinburne Sarawak Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Ir Professor Lau Hieng Ho and Sarawak Energy’s Group Chief Operating Officer Ir James Ung signing on behalf of their respective organisations.

“As one of the leading academic institutions in Sarawak, Swinburne University plays an important role in preparing young talent for the state’s future workforce. Through this collaboration, we aim to support the education of Sarawak’s youth by offering avenues to apply their learning in real-world settings, equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need before entering the workforce,” said James.
He added that Sarawak Energy looked forward to working with Swinburne Sarawak on emerging technologies and exploring opportunities that support Sarawak’s sustainable growth and prosperity.
In his remarks, Professor Lau highlighted Sarawak Energy’s support for students through scholarships and employment opportunities. He shared that Sarawak Energy had awarded scholarships for 76 Swinburne students from 2019 to 2022, and another 47 from 2023 to 2024.
“Employment numbers are on the rise. From 2019 to 2022, 24 of our graduates were employed by Sarawak Energy, and from 2023 to 2025, that number has increased to 37. We hope that this trend continues,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation for Sarawak Energy’s continued support, including sponsorship of student activities such as the Shell Eco-Marathon Competition over the past two years.
The partnership between Swinburne Sarawak and Sarawak Energy reflects their shared commitment to promoting innovation, nurturing young talent, and contributing to the development of Sarawak’s education and energy sectors.
