Swinburne empowers students with non-traditional career talk

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus recently hosted an inspiring talk on ‘Company Secretary as a Career’ by Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM). The talk was presented by Mr Ronatkinson Nujol, Head of Operations, SSM Sarawak branch.

Organised by the university’s Young Accountants Club (YAC), the talk shared valuable insights into alternative career paths for Accounting as well as Accounting and Finance students.

Participants were enlightened on the legal foundation of the company secretary profession as outlined in the Companies Act 2016. Ronatkinson also elaborated on the diverse career paths available in the field, information which captured the interest of the audience, many of whom are students keen to explore alternative careers.

According to Associate Professor Dr Fung Chorng Yuan, Head of School, School of Business, Swinburne Sarawak, Accounting graduates are often envisioned to have careers as accountants, auditors or tax consultants.

“There are alternative career paths for Accounting majors which utilise their education and degree,” said Fung. At Swinburne, students are encouraged to explore alternative career options and to proactively seek guidance from professionals in the field, he added.

The talk outlined the countless opportunities an Accounting graduate has and emphasised that qualified accountants can seamlessly transition into the role of a company secretary. The talk garnered significant interest, with approximately 60 students in attendance.

Swinburne Sarawak recognises the value of its students’ professional growth and offers them a unique advantage through the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Accelerate Program.

Under this program, eligible students can register with ACCA UK during their second year of study to undertake the final four strategic professional-level papers. Many Swinburne students have already benefitted from this opportunity, fast-tracking their path to becoming qualified accountants and, in turn, opening doors to the esteemed position of company secretary.

Swinburne is an Australian university based in Melbourne, Australia. The Sarawak campus in Kuching is the only international, full-fledged branch campus of the university. Its School of Business was awarded the AACSB International accreditation, a prestigious recognition by the world’s longest-serving accrediting body for business schools.

The accreditation recognises Swinburne Business School’s excellence in teaching, research, curricula development and student learning, placing it among the highest-quality business schools globally. Synonymous with the highest standards of quality, the AACSB accreditation has been awarded to only five per cent of the world’s schools offering business degrees at the bachelor level or higher.
