Swinburne Sarawak academics among top 2% scientists in the world

KUCHING – Swinburne Sarawak academics, including its Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer (DVC and CEO) and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), have recently been ranked in the top 2% of scientists in the world based on a science-wide author database of standardised citation indicators developed and led by Stanford University’s Professor John Ioannidis.

DVC and CEO Professor John Wilson and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Ajay Kapoor are in the top 2% of scientists in the world under the Career Long Citation Impact category.

Also ranked in the top 2% under the Single Calendar Year Impact category are Head of School of Business Professor Lim Weng Marc, Director of Research Centre for Sustainable Technologies Associate Professor Jaka Sunarso, and electrical and electronics engineering senior lecturer Dr Jubaer Ahmed.

As a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and a Chartered and Registered Professional Engineer, Professor Wilson’s area of expertise covers structural systems, earthquake engineering, and civil infrastructure. Professor Wilson, who has led the Sarawak campus since December 2017, was also recently awarded the RW Chapman medal from Engineers Australia for a paper titled ‘RC walls in Australia: seismic design and detailing to AS 1170.4 and AS 3600’.

The paper was co-written with Dr Scott Menegon, Research Fellow at Swinburne University of Technology; Professor Nelson Lam, Leader of Structures and Buildings in the Department of Infrastructure Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Australia; and Peter McBean, Joint Managing Director of Wallbridge Gilbert Aztec.

An award-winning, world-renowned researcher, Professor Kapoor has been instrumental in facilitating collaborative research aligned with the Sarawak state government priority areas including the digital economy, smart farming and clean energy. He also spearheads Swinburne’s international research engagement activities in India and South East Asia.

With a strong interest in finding blue ocean strategies to help businesses today navigate and succeed with agility in an increasingly competitive and dynamic business environment, Professor Lim actively conducts and publishes research on business strategy and behavioural change in “A” rank journals using a rigorous range of conceptual and empirical techniques. Professor Lim also has significant experience in shaping public policies as a discussion leader and a panellist at UNESCO and World Economic Forum events.

As a senior staff at the School of Chemical Engineering and Science, Associate Professor Jaka holds a Chartered Engineer qualification from Energy Institute UK. His research track record has been built upon the development and characterisation of electrochemical-based materials for sustainable energy delivery that includes batteries, fuel cells, membranes, and hydrogen related technologies. He has also established a research group in biomass conversion to fuels and value-added products at the Sarawak campus.

Dr Jubaer is a Chartered Professional Engineer and a Discipline Leader for the electrical and electronics engineering programme at Swinburne. He is interested in the study of photovoltaic system, renewable energy, application of machine learning algorithms in power systems, and designing converter/inverter topologies.
