Swinburne Sarawak celebrates anniversary

A ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Swinburne’s Sarawak campus will be held at the university on Saturday 25 September.

The ceremony, themed ‘Celebrating a decade of quality Australian education in Sarawak’, will be officiated by Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak, YB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Alfred Jabu anak Numpang, on behalf of Chief Minister of Sarawak and Pro-Chancellor of Swinburne Sarawak, Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Guests attending the event include members of the University Council, the Board of Directors and the Sarawak State Cabinet, representatives from the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Swinburne Sarawak alumni, corporate leaders, community leaders and school representatives.

Since opening in 2000, Swinburne Sarawak has grown rapidly. Beginning its academic mission with about 130 students at the former State Complex building in Kuching, the university now has about 3,500 full-time students from more than 40 countries.

Swinburne Sarawak is staffed by highly qualified and experienced national and international academics, many of whom bring with them years of industry experience.

“A Swinburne education prepares its graduates to live and work in a world where professionals need to be capable of high levels of international interaction,” Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Swinburne Sarawak Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen said.

In 2004, the campus changed its name to Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus when it was awarded university status as a foreign branch campus by the Malaysian Government.

It underwent an expansion in 2008 in line with the continuous growth of its student population.

In May this year, the university was awarded self-accrediting status by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency, giving the university autonomy to accredit its own programs.

The Sarawak campus also achieved an ‘excellent’ (tier five) rating in the 2009 MQA Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education Institutions (SETARA) in July.
