KUCHING – A total of 105 students have joined Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ latest batch of its English Enhancement Program (EEP), the largest cohort the university has received for the program to date.
Since its inaugural EEP intake on 1 August 2022, Swinburne Sarawak has seen a steady increase in the number of students joining the program. The first-ever intake comprised 41 students, followed by 38 students in the second group, 65 from the third and now 105 in its current batch which commenced on 17 July 2023.
Sponsored by Yayasan Sarawak, the EEP is a specially designed four-week program aimed at enhancing students’ English language proficiency while paving the way for a smooth transition into university life. The program is open to all Sarawakian students who meet the entry criteria.
Apart from enjoying fully-funded program fees, students enrolled in the EEP will receive a one-off RM300 allowance as well as free on-campus accommodation at Swinburne Sarawak throughout the duration of the program.
Dr Bibiana Lim Chiu Yiong, Head of Learning and Teaching Unit at Swinburne Sarawak, said the EEP provides students with an immersive environment to acquire English language skills collectively, such as academic reading, writing and communication. She added that the program is a valuable opportunity for students to gain an advantage over their peers in adjusting to university life.
“Looking back on the growth of this program, in every aspect, Swinburne Sarawak’s EEP is always improving in its course delivery and development. Our EEP team is always striving for the best approach to cater to the different needs and expectations of every batch,” she said.
Lecturer Marione Anne Foo described the EEP teaching and learning experience as empowering, not only in terms of language learning but also self-discovery and general knowledge acquisition.
“Apart from improving their English language skills, students benefit from motivational and personal awareness workshops, such as ‘The Early Leader Program’, ‘Managing Stress’, ‘Self-Care’ and others. These workshops aim to prepare EEP students for their upcoming university life.
“Furthermore, the ‘Uni Life Experience’ program is an integral part of the EEP, allowing students to explore the multitude of opportunities available both on- and off-campus. Through this program, students engage in social activities, networking events and adventurous experiences within the community. They also have the chance to connect with their seniors through the Buddy Support System on campus,” said Foo.
Upon completing the EEP, students can articulate seamlessly into Swinburne Sarawak’s program intakes and kickstart their journey towards getting a world-class Australian education.

Mohd Aiman bin Suhadi, one of the students from Swinburne Sarawak’s EEP July cohort, hoped that by going through the program, he would be able to enhance his English language proficiency in preparation for his further studies as well as his future career.
“I would definitely recommend the EEP to other students. You get to improve your English skills, meet new friends and adapt to university life. The activities have been immersive and enjoyable,” said Mohd Aiman.
Harvey Phui Wei Hung, an EEP student from Miri, encouraged more students from Miri and outside Kuching to join the program here to get the opportunity to experience Swinburne Sarawak and Kuching.
“We’re still in the middle of the program but I can say I’ve been enjoying it so much – making new friends, meeting fun lecturers and attending classes and activities. The activity I’ve enjoyed the most so far was our visit to the Borneo Cultures Museum,” said Phui.
