KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus recently received visitors from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) led by Mr Ang Wen How, Education Relationships Lead of ACCA Maritime Southeast Asia.
This was part of ACCA’s visits to their approved learning partners as their support to institutions that offer ACCA courses. Swinburne Sarawak’s team, led by Professor Brian Wong Kee Mun, Dean of Faculty of Business, Design and Arts, and Associate Professor Fung Chorng Yuan, Head of School of Business, received the ACCA visitors.
Founded in 1904, ACCA is one of the largest global bodies for professional accountants, with more than 200,000 students and members globally. Employers all over the world seek out ACCA members to lead their business to sustainable success, as ACCA members are regarded as strategic thinkers with high ethical integrity, strong financial know-how and the right business acumen.
During the visit on 10 February 2023, a fruitful discussion was held, which included topics such as how ACCA could assist in promoting Swinburne Sarawak’s ACCA Accelerate Program as well as other ways in which ACCA could lend support.
Swinburne Sarawak started conducting ACCA strategic professional level courses in 2017. Since then, many students have benefitted, with some graduating with both a degree and the ACCA qualification.
Swinburne Sarawak students who major in Accounting or Accounting and Finance are eligible to register under the university’s ACCA Accelerate Program. These students can take the ACCA examinations while in their second and final years of their degree program. Under the ACCA Accelerate Program, students enjoy a significant reduction in the initial registration fee, exemption fees and waiver of annual subscription fee up to the year of graduation.

“Our ACCA tutors hold an ACCA qualification. They know the expectations of the ACCA exams. They have also attended the ‘Train the Trainer’ courses conducted by ACCA to ensure they are up-to-date with the latest syllabus development and teaching pedagogy.
“In addition, our tutor team has constantly been invited to attend ‘Train the Marker’ courses via the ACCA’s newly-launched Education Hub. The purpose of these courses is to sharpen their skills in marking ACCA mock exams and in providing helpful advice to students in order to increase the students’ ability to pass exams,” said Associate Professor Fung.
He also pointed out that the university has designated personnel to assist its ACCA students and provide advice on all ACCA related matters, such as online registration, examination entry requirements and exemptions.
“Our students prefer to study ACCA with us because they are familiar with the learning environment and our Canvas learning management system (LMS). We have our own LMS that helps students to better manage their learning materials and resources effectively. This gives them peace of mind and they can focus on their studies,” he said.
Swinburne Sarawak has bi-annual intakes for its ACCA courses, in January and July. The courses are also open to non-Swinburne degree students. Those who are interested to apply can contact Dr Ling Chui Ching, Executive and Professional Course Director, via ccling@swinburne.edu.my.
