KUCHING – A total of 501 top students at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus were recently awarded RM1.5 million in scholarships, including five awarded by the university’s industry partners.
Professor Ken Heskin, who is the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Swinburne Sarawak, presented the university’s scholarships at a ceremony on campus.
The biggest group of recipients comprised 187 students who scored a CGPA of 3.75 and above in their degree and diploma courses. They received the Academic Merit Award.
This was followed by 180 newly-enrolled students from foundation and degree programs, who had obtained six to 10 As in SPM and STPM. They were awarded the Academic Excellence Award.
Seventy-nine students who enrolled before 2011 were presented with Merit Scholarship, which is awarded to students from all courses who scored two High Distinctions and two Distinctions.
The Resident Advisors Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to senior students residing at the university’s on-campus hostel, saw eight recipients. To be eligible, candidates for this award are required to contribute to the development and well-being of hostel residents by providing support, guidance and intellectual leadership.
Seven students received the Pro Vice-Chancellor Academic Excellence Award. It is awarded to foundation, diploma and degree students enrolled from 2011 onwards and must have scored four High Distinctions in a semester.
Five students, newly enrolled into foundation, diploma or degree programs, who had excelled academically and in co-curricular activities while in secondary school, were presented the Sports and Leadership Award.
The same number of students received the Postgraduate Research Studentships. They are Master of Science by Research students Diana Choo Chung Ying, Juliet Kiama Warimu, Juliana Ho Sing Fang, and Ian Chang yang, and PhD by Research student Andrea Wee Yian Lin.
The Swinburne Sarawak Pathway Scholarship saw 25 recipients. This category is awarded to graduates of the university’s foundation and diploma programs who are entering into first year degree programs.
Meanwhile, in the industry awards category, Christine Yii won Ernst & Young’s Best Accounting Student for Year 1 while Krishman Varges received the company’s Best Accounting Student for Year 2 award.
Evan Y.F. Poh and Liu Kian Hong received Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad’s Best Student in Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) Year 2 and Year 3 awards, respectively.
Wisma Printing Sdn Bhd’s Bachelor of Design (Graphic Design) Book Prize was won by Dayang Nurul Aini bt Awg Fadzellah.
