KUCHING: Fifty students from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus recently took time off from their studies to help spruce up The Salvation Army Children’s Home at Jalan Upland.
Volunteers from the university’s CPA Australia Student Charter and Leo Club spent half a day sprucing up the Home’s premises.
The volunteers organised themselves to the task of painting playground facilities, cleaning the compound and preparing lunch for the children.
According to Major Francis Ng, Head of the Boys Home who welcomed the volunteers on behalf of the supervisor of the Children’s Home, there are about 50 children of all ages under its care.
“The children, some of whom are still very young, need a lot of love and care too,” Ng added.
As the Home depends largely on donation, some students brought with them new as well as used items including clothes, stationeries and shoes which they donated to the Home.
“Our community can help play a role in providing a better environment for the children to learn and grow. Nurturing children is important so that when they grow up, they can in turn give back to society,” said Darrel Lim, president of Leo CLub.
Prior to their departure, the volunteers provided and joined the children for lunch.
