KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus will be enveloped in darkness for one hour this Saturday, 27 March 2010 in support of Earth Hour.
The university will join tens of millions around the world in turning off all non-essential lights from 8:30pm to 9:30pm local time as a show of its concern against climate change.
“We have a moral responsibility to our environment and we hope that by supporting Earth Hour it will make a difference,” said Nadeha Kamaludin, Assistant Manager of Marketing Services and Communications from the Business Development and Communications Department.
“Undeniably, studies show drastic changes in weather patterns are taking place all over the world as a result of the destruction of the environment and the production of harmful greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels,” she said.
This is an issue that affects everyone no matter which part of the world we are located, Nadeha said.
“In fact, we should turn off all non-essential lights as a practice every day,” she said. “All of us can make a difference.”
The students’ Green Club will be holding a candlelight vigil between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on campus. The university urges all students and staff to support Earth Hour.
