KUCHING – It was an exciting start to the month for Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ English Enhancement Program (EEP) students, who enjoyed an excursion to the Borneo Cultures Museum on 6 August 2022.
The students first had the opportunity to go on a hydrogen bus city tour, enjoying the sights around Kuching before arriving at the museum. They then explored the various galleries of the museum which are centred around different themes, such as ‘In Harmony with Nature’, ‘Time Changes’ and ‘Objects of Desire’. The students had a great time learning more about their home state of Sarawak and its rich culture through the exhibits and detailed narratives.
Also joining the day’s activities was Mahathir bin Mohammad, Acting Assistant Director under the Programs & Assistance Section of Yayasan Sarawak.
Immanuel anak Martin, one of the students enrolled in the EEP, described the excursion to the Borneo Cultures Museum as fun, engaging and exciting.
“Today’s activity allowed us to communicate and interact with other students outside of our usual friend groups, so we made new friends too. We learned a lot during our visit to the Borneo Cultures Museum today. There were some things that we didn’t quite understand, but the lecturers and staff who accompanied us were very helpful by providing explanations. I salute the Swinburne team in organising today’s activity and managing us well.
“We are enjoying the EEP so much and having a lot of fun especially during these kinds of activities. This really helps us to gain more confidence. I encourage SPM graduates to join the EEP. It is like a stepping stone before entering university life and they can learn and experience a lot during the programme,” said Immanuel.
Swinburne Sarawak extended its gratitude to its strategic partners Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd and the Borneo Cultures Museum for their sponsorship of the hydrogen bus city tour and museum tour respectively, as well as Yayasan Sarawak for its support in fully funding the EEP.

Swinburne Sarawak’s first batch of EEP students kicked off the programme on 1 August. This special four-week programme is fully sponsored by Yayasan Sarawak and it is open to all Sarawakian students who meet the entry criteria. The programme – which acts as a pathway from SPM, STPM, or equivalent qualification to a foundation, diploma, or degree programme – is designed to develop students’ English language proficiency in preparation for their university journey. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their skills in speaking, reading, writing, listening, understanding, critical thinking and communication.
Aside from paying zero tuition fees for the EEP, students are also provided with accommodation, living allowance and a one-off relocation assistance. As the programme is carried out at the university’s campus in Kuching, students will be able to get a taste of life as a Swinburne Sarawak student. They will get the chance to discover all the opportunities that university life has to offer – not only on campus but also throughout the community from social engagement, networking and adventure.
Those who enrol in the EEP are eligible to continue their studies at foundation, diploma, or degree levels at Swinburne Sarawak.
