Swinburne’s Early Childhood Education Students Showcase Expertise at Tiny Tots 2024

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ Diploma of Early Childhood Education (ECE) program brought joy and hands-on learning to life at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak with the success of its Tiny Tots 2024 event.

Designed for children aged 3-4, the event provided a morning filled with creativity, fun, and educational activities that left smiles on the faces of children, parents, and siblings alike. The state library was buzzed with excitement as 25 ECE students and three lecturers hosted over 50 participants, showcasing the innovative and compassionate approach that defines Swinburne’s ECE program.

Tiny Tots 2024 featured storytelling in English and Malay, exciting hands-on activities like balloon picking, colour sorting, hand painting, air clay crafting, and a magical fishing wonderland. The day’s highlight was a lively sing-along session of “Row Your Boat” and the beloved “Rasa Sayang,” with the children enthusiastically joining in the rhythm and movements.

Tiny Tots is a partnership between Swinburne Sarawak and Pustaka Negeri Sarawak. Now in its second year, it continues to thrive, offering invaluable real-world experience for Swinburne’s ECE students. These aspiring educators applied their skills and knowledge of event planning, and emceeing, and held fruitful engagement with the children and their families, classroom knowledge used in a meaningful, community-focused setting.

“This event is a testament to the innovative spirit and dedication of our ECE students,” said Ting Mee Ling, Discipline Leader for the  Early Childhood Education program. “It embodies our commitment to shaping compassionate educators who are ready to inspire and nurture the next generation.”

Swinburne’s ECE program is designed to equip students with the skills to be resourceful and ethical educators. By embracing creativity, adaptability, and an entrepreneurial mindset, graduates are prepared to make a lasting impact in diverse educational settings and beyond.

Furthermore, the curriculum is designed to expose students to a range of local and international cultures, promote diversity, and provide opportunities for students to examine various teaching philosophies from different perspectives. It focuses on social-emotional development and the integration of educational principles that are relevant and forward-thinking. The curriculum also equips students with valuable knowledge and skills to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world and to make a real difference in the lives of children.
