Swinburne’s Final Year Showcase Revolutionizes Student Excellence and Industry Collaboration

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus recently held the Final Year Showcase, a ground-breaking event that was rebranded from the Final Year Research Project (FYRP) Conference.

Held at its campus on 30 May 2023, the event not only showcase the students’ final year projects, it also featured an industry award ceremony, career opportunities and networking sessions.

A presentation on “Unlocking Your Future with Swinburne Postgraduate by Research Degrees” was attended by more than 300 participants, comprising students, staff, alumni and industry partners.

The presentation was presented by Dr Victor Bong, a senior lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, and Industry Placement Coordinator with the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science.

Dr Bong was assisted by postgraduate students Karen Kong Gah Hie, Bong Zhang Ru and Yeo Lip Siang. It introduced the audience to the remarkable work done by these research students.

The Weida Environmental Sustainability Award, sponsored by Weida (M) Bhd in Semester 2, 2022, was also presented at the showcase. Two students whose projects demonstrated exceptional and innovative products and services received the accolade. 

The project was awarded for meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Meanwhile, two robotics and mechatronics students were also awarded the James Dyson Foundation Bursary by the James Dyson Foundation.

Justin Sia Wei Kiat and Wong Yung En-Lau were selected for their innovation, the significance of their research outcomes and a proof-of-concept that is ready and will be submitted to the James Dyson Award 2023.

Also organised was a plenary session titled “Light Up Your Career with Greatech”.  The session was led by Trisha Goh, a talent and operations specialist from Greatech Integration (M) Sdn Bhd.

Greatech’s presentation left attendees and participants inspired to achieve their career aspirations.

Greatech also presented the Best Presenter Award to Clement Cheong Lik Kong, Eiton Zie Teng Ng and Derrick Hong Liang Kho as Best Student Presenters for their oral presentations.

As the main sponsor of the showcase, Naim Holdings Bhd organised a career booth and networking sessions for students and participants to explore employment opportunities with the property development and construction company.

Final Year Project Showcase

The FYP Showcase serves as a platform for industry players and students to network and form partnerships and collaborations.

The remarkable turnout of more than 30 industry partners from Singapore and across Malaysia underscored the industry’s vested interest in fostering future talents.

The participation of these industries provided invaluable feedback on the students’ projects and serve as a motivating factor for students to be future engineers, scientists and technologists of excellence.

In line with Swinburne University’s Horizon 2025 vision and commitment to various Swinburne Moonshots, the Final Year Showcase stood as a testament to Swinburne’s dedication to lifelong learning, and industrial engagement n partnership.

A second Final-Year Project Showcase is expected in the later half of 2023.
