Two PhDs among more than 170 graduates awarded scrolls

KUCHING – Two doctors of philosophy (PhDs) were among 174 students who received scrolls at the graduation ceremony of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, today (21 April).

Dr Sim Kwan Yong and Dr Wong Wei Jing were conferred doctoral degrees by Swinburne University of Technology Acting Chancellor, Andrew Dix, during the ceremony which was held for the first time on campus.

A senior lecturer with the university’s Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, Sim’s thesis was “Cost-effective metamorphic testing techniques for failure detection in software with oracle problem”.

Wong’s thesis was “Cancellable fingerprint authentication schemes for bio-crypto applications”.

Dix also presented scrolls to 32 diploma, 124 bachelor degree, and 16 master degree graduates.

Of the bachelor degrees, business and engineering made up the biggest number.  
Also presented was a civil engineering degree with honours, awarded posthumously to Clement Kho Ngap Hung who passed away in a road accident last year. His sister, Catherine, walked up to the stage to receive his scroll from the Acting Chancellor.   

Graduating with their Malaysian peers were more than 30 students from 16 countries, including those from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Sri Lanka. Swinburne Sarawak has an international student population of over 20 per cent. Its 4,000 students on campus hail from more than 60 countries.

In attendance at the ceremony were the State Secretary of Sarawak, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi Bin Abdul Ghani who is also the chairman of the university’s board of directors and university council, Swinburne University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Linda Kristjanson, and Swinburne Sarawak Deputy Vice-Chancellor and CEO Professor Janet Gregory.

This is the first graduation ceremony of the university for the year. The second and larger ceremony will take place in October.
