The Swinburne Sarawak Green Club joined the Sarawak Eco Warriors, Kuching Beach Cleaners and the Wildlife Conservation Society to celebrate International Coastal Clean-up Day on Saturday, 22 September 2018 with hard work under the relentless sun.
Their celebration was one that involved active participation in a beach clean-up at Pandan Beach, Lundu. Twenty-five Swinburne students took part, including non-Green Club members and exchange students who were motivated to help with this worthy cause. They joined 55 other environmentally-friendly conservation-minded volunteers.
After one and a half hours’ sweaty work combing the beach for litter, the volunteers collected 40 bags of trash weighing 180 kg. Although the trash was proof of poor waste management by coastal villages and boats that ply the area, as well as a lack of civic-mindedness among beach visitors, the volunteers were glad that their efforts helped to make the beach and its waters safer for humans and wildlife.
Amy Tie Yi Xuan, Swinburne Sarawak Green Club’s Treasurer who led the club’s team at the beach clean-up felt encouraged that the number of volunteers had grown since the last beach clean-up at Matang in August. Despite the realisation that there is constant need for beach clean-ups, Amy was glad that more students are becoming aware about the environmental pollution and the need to practise more environmentally-friendly habits.
