School of Chemical Engineering and Science and Swinburne Charity Cruiser Club (SCCC) organised an awareness talk on “Problem Gambling and Prevention” on 11 August 2021 (Wednesday) 3 pm – 4:30 pm through Microsoft Teams. It is our great honoured to have Mr. Bryant Leong (COO of Gambler Rehab Centre Malaysia) and his colleagues and students share their testimonies and the services provided by Gambler Rehab Centre Malaysia (GRC) across Malaysia. There are about 20 Swinburne staff and students who joined this awareness talk.

This awareness talk aims to deter from gambling and recognise possible warning signs of problem gambling and other risky behaviours that can lead to serious problems, even addiction. Gambling addiction can be dangerous, but society often underestimates it, so it is crucial for us to know how to fight this problem. Gambling addicts suffer from various problems related to their job, family, and health. The addiction may lead to other disorders like depression. As an educator, we can also learn more about the potential risks of youth gambling and how we can do a better job of helping our youths make different choices about using their leisure time.

The event started with a welcome address by Mr Justin Chua, President of Swinburne Charity Cruiser Club (SCCC). He is also the emcee of this awareness talk. Mr Justin Chua then introduced the Guest Speakers, after which Mr. Bryant Leong, COO of Gambler Rehab Centre Malaysia) took the stage and started with the talk. Mr. Bryant Leong begins his speech with a video delivered messages that problem gambling can have many negative effects on individuals and families, and signs of the issue are often more hidden than other addictions. The talk was followed by Problem Gambling Self-Test Questions and testimonies sharing by GRC members. Mr Thong, the person in charge of Miri GRC Centre, also shared the services available at Miri GRC Centre.

The sharing session is followed by Q&A session and Dr. Elaine presents a certificate of appreciation to Mr. Bryant Leong. Audiences were invited to join the group photo session. The event ended with an honorarium to the guests and a vote of thanks.
