KUCHING – The 2023 Future ICT Coders Workshop and Competition event hosted by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus was a resounding success, spanning three days of intensive learning and competition from 28 to 30 August 2023 followed by a closing ceremony on 30 September 2023.
The event brought together over 100 enthusiastic students from five prominent schools, namely SMK Sungai Tapang, SMK Sungai Maong, SMK (A) Tun Ahmad Zaidi, SMK Kuching High and Chung Hua Middle School No 1. It featured five exciting tracks: Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Internet of Things (IoT) and Software Development.
Students had the unique opportunity to delve into these cutting-edge fields through hands-on workshops, engaging presentations by industry experts and immersive activities. They not only expanded their knowledge but also honed their practical skills in these critical domains.
The event’s highlight was the closing ceremony, where winners and commendable winners in each track were announced and celebrated for their outstanding accomplishments. The winning team in each track received RM1,000 while the commendable team won RM300.
The winning team in the Artificial Intelligence track comprised Joshua Mugan Bunyau, Nathan Yap Jia De, Matheus Chin Yan Yu and Steven Cheng Yu Jay from SMK Sungai Maong whereas the winning team in the Cybersecurity track comprised Darren Fung Jin Hui and Jivin Voon Jin Jie from SMK Kuching High.
Eunice Tsai You Tong, Happy Wong Xuan Yat, Chew Zi Shun and Kam Ren Jie from SMK Sungai Tapang won in the Data Science track while Jonathan Camillus Lau and Brandon Chan Pei Yong from SMK Kuching High won in the Internet of Things track. The winning team for the Software Development track was from SMK Sungai Tapang, consisting of Athena Sasuad, Esther Kho Xuan Ni, Nur Qhadijah Umairah and Chew Boon Choi.
“During the three-day workshop and competition, it was exciting to see the appetite that the participants have to learn more in the various fields of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Internet of Things and Software Development, on top of the prior knowledge that they have,” said Ts Dr Kelvin Yong Sheng Chek, organising chairperson for the 2023 Future ICT Coders Workshop and Competition.
“There is a need to instil such appetite and curiosity in the next generation so that they will be ready to be the inventors, innovators and users of these technologies. Here at Swinburne, we are committed to that,” he added.
