60 Swinburne Sarawak students learn the importance of teamwork

KUCHING – Sixty CPA Australia Student Chapter members from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus learned that they can overcome almost any obstacles if they work together as a team, during a rigorous three-day camp at a beach resort recently.

As part of an activity to build esprit de corps, the students were put through their paces in the CPA Australia Malaysia Division-supported event. To develop and sharpen their soft skills, creativity as well as leadership skills, the participants took part in obstacle courses, treasure hunt, night jungle walk and a series of team-building games.

On hand to share his knowledge and experience on good leadership skills with the participants was Edwin Wong, the Business Development Executive from CPA Australia Malaysia Division.

“The camp showed me what it really means to work together as a team, especially during the obstacle course and the beach games which required a lot of team work,” said Ronnie Teo Teck Wei, a final year accounting student.

“I think we finally realized how much we needed each other when we did the last bit (a sketch presentation) during the handover dinner with only an hour or two to prepare. It was very memorable and fun and I would give an arm and a leg to go through it all over again!”

Esther Yong, another final year accounting student, also enjoyed the experience. “I had a wonderful time during the three-day-two-night camp. It was a great experience and I would say one of the best I have attended so far in my University life.

“I enjoyed the obstacle course and jungle night walk the most. It is undeniable that everyone was so tired at the end of the day but it was worth it because we learned the value of team spirit and discipline. Also, the appreciation night dinner was such a memorable and touching one. I would like to say a big thank you to the committee members of CPAASC of Swinburne Sarawak for organising such a fabulous leadership camp. Keep up the good work!”

For Chloe Oh, the organizing chairperson, it was all worth it. “It has been a great honour to organize the event. I believe all the participants as well as the organising committee gained something valuable from all the activities and we had all learnt a lot as a team. I would like to express my appreciation to everyone who contributed to this successful and fruitful event,” said the Bachelor of Commerce student.

The event was made possible with the support of CPA Australia Malaysia Division, Swinburne Sarawak’s School of Business and Design, IIEE Geosynthetics Sdn Bhd, Bas Sekolah Kong Jin Foh and Auto-Bot.
