Poem by business student Joyce Teh is a winner

KUCHING – Final year Bachelor of Business (Accounting and Finance) student Joyce Teh Yee has won the Swinburne Poetry Competition 2021 with her poem entitled ‘The Dancer’.

Her winning piece was among three she had submitted based on the theme of ‘Dreams’.

In second place was PhD student Dewi Widyastuti with her poem ‘To My Daughter’ based on the theme of ‘Love’.

Third place was won by Bernice Ting Jing Shuen, a first-year engineering undergraduate student. Her poem ‘Dish Washing’ was based on the theme of ‘Poetry and Madness’.

The winners were announced on 23 June at a virtual prize-giving ceremony. Professor John Wilson, the guest of honour, spoke on the importance of students expressing their thoughts and emotions creatively through poetry.

Also present were Su Sueh Ing, Head of the School of Foundation Studies, and Adeline Sophia Ho, Manager of Information Resources. The organising team members were Bong Siew Ming from the library and judges Dr Christina Yin, Cassandra Lau and Liaw Chiew Han from the School of Foundation Studies.

This is the third year that the School of Foundation Studies and Information Resources have jointly organised the competition, which ran from 19 April until 21 May. A total of 20 submissions were received with foundation, undergraduate and PhD students taking part.

Participants had to write three poems based on a single theme of their choice: Love, Life, Humanity and Dreams.
