KUCHING – Teams from the School of Engineering and Science fought their way to take the overall challenge trophy in Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ sports carnival, recently.
Divided by schools, a total of six teams including a staff team, competed in futsal, basketball, squash, badminton, table tennis and a telematch from 5 to 10 October.
In futsal, School of Business & Enterprise took first place in the men’s category while Engineering & Science was second, and Business & Enterprise, third.
In the women’s fiercely fought matches, the staff team put up a good fight to beat their rivals to emerge champs. The Engineering & Science team was second while Business & Enterprise trailed behind in third.
Engineering & Science showed their prowess in squash when they won the top spot in both the individual and team categories. It also snatched the third spot in the two categories. The team from the School of Language and Foundation was second in the individual and team events.
Engineering & Science was again in the thick of the action and went on top of the rankings in basketball, table tennis and badminton. Business & Enterprise cagers managed to hang on to second place with Language and Foundation in third.
Business & Enterprise showed their determination by taking second place in table tennis and badminton, while the university’s staff team managed to cling on to third place in both events.
At the prize giving ceremony Tuan Haji Hussain Bin Taiban, Registrar of Swinburne Sarawak, congratulated the teams on their sportsmanship and fighting spirit throughout the six-day event.
“Congratulations to the winners but to me you are all winners by your participation in the games. We hope that next year we will see more participants competing in more events,” he said.
Haji Hussain also thanked and congratulated the organising committee, headed by the university’s Student Operations Department, for their efforts and for the smooth flow of the games.
He also expressed his gratitude to the Sarawak branch of Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd, Eltech Sdn Bhd, PPES Works Sdn Bhd and Manna Zone for their sponsorships.
