Chong received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering (UNIMAS). His principal research interests include thermal fluids, renewable energy, biomass combustion development and performance, sustainable energy management, building services, and educational research.
He worked as an engineer at JKR Sarawak, Mechanical Branch, from 2017 until 2018. Chong is a registered Professional Engineer (Mechanical) with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), Charted Engineer with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Registered Electrical Energy Manager (REEM) with the Energy Commission, and a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
His recognition in teaching has been demonstrated via the grants/competition awarded in the Adobe Innovation Grant 2021, Swinburne Sarawak Learning and Teaching Grant 2020 and winner for the Innovate Malaysia Design Competition (Shell Design Challenge) 2019.
